As the Director of Data Engineering, you will lead the vision and roadmap for enhanced cloud-enabled data products and services for Second Nature. In this role, you will provide strategic direction, technical expertise, and hands-on leadership to build SN’s future data platform including data lakehouse architecture, optimized data pipeline ETL and orchestration, analytics solutions, machine learning adoption and artificial intelligence evolution. As a Director of Data Engineering, you will be instrumental in driving innovation, ensuring data quality, and fostering collaboration across teams to harness the power of data for informed decision-making. You will:

  • Develop a horizontal data strategy roadmap in conjunction with Engineering, Integrations, RevOps, FinOps and Customer Success teams’ input to enable technology solutions for managing data that meet the needs of multiple business stakeholder groups.
  • Work closely with the Integration Team to provide the data capabilities to enable large-scale data interchange with SN client and vendor base.
  • Work with the Product and Engineering teams to build out SN’s AI pilot platform - providing the data engineering leadership and guidance to assist in the deployment of this flagship AI application.
  • Identify existing data capability and infrastructure gaps or opportunities within and across initiatives and provide subject matter expertise in support of remediation.
  • Provide technical leadership in data architecture, ensuring best practices for data modeling, storage, and retrieval.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to articulate data needs and devise solutions that align seamlessly with business goals.
  • Supervise data governance and quality control, ensuring precision, coherence, and adherence to industry standards.
  • Promote the adoption of sophisticated analytics techniques and technologies to extract valuable insights from extensive datasets.
  • Assist in establishing a data engineering and science organization by leveraging existing data roles within the company and recruiting to fulfill the envisioned future organizational structure.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to the team, fostering a culture of ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in the data engineering field, incorporating them into the organization's data strategy.
  • Partner with stakeholders to pinpoint data-driven innovation opportunities that enhance business outcomes.
  • Institute and uphold robust data security and privacy protocols to safeguard confidential information.
  • Promote agile methodologies and DevOps practices for efficient and high-quality data engineering processes.


  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 10+ years experience in data engineering, with a strong track record of designing and implementing data solutions.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or Scala, and experience with data processing frameworks (Matillion, Hevo, AWS Glue, Spark , Hadoop)
  • In-depth understanding of data warehousing concepts, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and data modeling techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as data integration and transformation tools
  • Demonstrated experience in architecture, design and development of scalable distributed event driven data products.
  • Experience in anonymizing data, data product development, analytical models, and AI governance
  • Ability to create strategies and plans that define how information can be utilized to support an organization's overall business strategy, and how that information and data is organized, and governed inside an organization.
  • Familiarity with industry best practices for collection and use of data
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to understand complex information product constructs.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate complex data challenges.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines
